The Tustins, seasoned travelers with a passion for exploring South Africa and its surrounding areas, were excited to make unforgettable memories during their visit to the park.
As reported by Caters News, they had been eagerly observing the wildlife around a waterhole for hours when they noticed a young elephant having difficulty trying to get out of the hole. The calf had accidentally fallen in and was now stuck in the muddy water.

Equipped with his camera, Richard captured the intense scene by taking photographs, while Vanessa filmed the heroic rescue. The young calf, trapped in muddy water up to its knees, was clearly in distress. Despite the mother elephant’s continuous efforts to save her baby, she struggled to pull the calf out.

Richard vividly recounted the mother elephant’s frantic state, mentioning how she cried out in desperation, with pure fear visible in her eyes. He suspected that the calf might have been her first offspring, which possibly amplified the mother’s anxiety.

In the end, a bigger elephant arrived on the scene. Using its strong trunk, this savior carefully nudged the mother out of the way and hoisted the scared calf out of the water.
As soon as the calf was back on solid ground, the entire herd erupted in joyful trumpeting, a sight that Richard found to be truly remarkable. While these kinds of rescues may happen often, actually witnessing one is a rare occurrence.
Looking back on the experience, Richard expressed, “It was a truly unforgettable moment that showcases the intelligence of these animals and the intricacies of their social dynamics.”

The rescue operation lasted barely a minute, giving a fascinating insight into the world of elephant behavior. The Tustins find joy in observing animal dynamics, likening it to front-row seats at a captivating live show. Their encounters have exposed them to the intricate workings of elephant society, from hierarchical structures to the playful antics of the younger members of the herd.

Richard is a firm believer in the deep social connections among elephants and finds them to be highly intelligent creatures from whom humans can gain valuable knowledge. ElephantVoices, a non-profit organization focused on promoting ethical treatment and management of elephants, points out that these creatures thrive in a fluid social hierarchy with intricate bonds ranging from family ties to larger social networks. Richard is convinced that observing nature more attentively can provide insightful teachings and wisdom.
